systolic

Pronunciation: sis-TOL-ik

Relating to the phase of the heartbeat when the heart muscle contracts and pumps blood.

Full Definition

Systolic refers to the phase of the cardiac cycle when the heart muscle contracts (systole), pumping blood from the ventricles into the arteries. In blood pressure measurements, the systolic pressure is the higher number, representing the pressure in arteries when the heart beats. Normal systolic blood pressure is less than 120 mmHg. Systolic heart failure occurs when the heart's ability to contract and pump blood is reduced, typically measured by a decreased ejection fraction.

Usage

Usage note: Always pair with diastolic when discussing blood pressure; distinguish from 'systemic'.
