aortic root

The portion of the left ventricular outflow tract that includes the aortic valve, sinuses of Valsalva, and sinotubular junction.

Full Definition

The aortic root is a complex anatomical structure comprising the aortic valve apparatus and the initial portion of the ascending aorta. It extends from the aortic valve annulus to the sinotubular junction and includes the three sinuses of Valsalva (right, left, and non-coronary). The aortic root houses the aortic valve leaflets and serves as the origin of the right and left main coronary arteries. Normal dimensions vary with body size and age, but significant dilation (>40mm in adults) may indicate aortic root disease requiring surgical intervention. Imaging assessment includes measurements at multiple levels: annulus, sinus of Valsalva, sinotubular junction, and ascending aorta. Root pathology can involve the valve (stenosis, regurgitation), wall (aneurysm, dissection), or both.

Usage

Usage note: Specify measurement location within the root; distinguish from other aortic segments in reporting.

In Context

  • "The aortic root measured 42 mm at the sinus of Valsalva, indicating mild dilation." — Echocardiography report
  • "CT angiography showed normal aortic root dimensions without evidence of dissection." — Aortic imaging report
