Characteristic wall motion pattern in stress cardiomyopathy where the cardiac apex becomes akinetic while the base remains hypercontractile.

Full Definition

Apical ballooning is the hallmark finding of takotsubo stress cardiomyopathy, characterized by akinesis or dyskinesis of the left ventricular apex with hyperkinetic motion of the basal segments during systole. This creates a distinctive balloon-like appearance of the apex during end-systole. The pattern is typically accompanied by chest pain and ECG changes mimicking acute myocardial infarction, but occurs in the absence of significant coronary artery disease. The condition is often triggered by emotional or physical stress and is usually reversible.
