For mitral regurgitation, EROA values >0.4 cm² indicate severe regurgitation, while values <0.2 cm² suggest mild regurgitation. EROA provides more accurate assessment than qualitative color Doppler alone and is essential for surgical decision-making. The measurement requires integration with other parameters including regurgitant volume and vena contracta width.
