Pre-contrast T1 relaxation time measurement of myocardium used to detect diffuse fibrosis, edema, and infiltrative cardiomyopathies.

Full Definition

Myocardial native T1 refers to the intrinsic T1 relaxation time of myocardial tissue measured before contrast agent administration using specialized cardiac MRI sequences. Native T1 values reflect the cellular and extracellular composition of the myocardium, with elevated values typically indicating increased water content (edema, inflammation) or protein deposition (amyloidosis). Normal native T1 values are approximately 950-1050 milliseconds at 1.5T, though values vary with field strength and sequence parameters. This technique is particularly valuable for detecting diffuse pathological processes that may not be visible on conventional imaging, such as early stages of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, cardiac amyloidosis, or myocarditis.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify field strength (1.5T or 3T) when reporting native T1 values as normal ranges differ significantly.
