nulling

MRI technique that suppresses signal from specific tissues by timing the inversion pulse to eliminate their signal.

Full Definition

Nulling is a fundamental MRI concept used extensively in cardiac imaging to selectively suppress signal from specific tissues. In late gadolinium enhancement imaging, the inversion time is carefully chosen to null normal myocardium, making areas of enhancement (scar or fibrosis) appear bright against a dark background. Proper nulling is critical for optimal contrast and accurate interpretation of pathological tissue enhancement.
