cardiac hemochromatosis

Iron deposition in the myocardium leading to restrictive cardiomyopathy, often associated with systemic iron overload.

Full Definition

Cardiac hemochromatosis refers to pathological iron accumulation in cardiac tissue, typically as part of systemic iron overload disorders. The condition can result from hereditary hemochromatosis, repeated blood transfusions, or other causes of iron excess. Iron deposits primarily in cardiomyocytes and can lead to restrictive or dilated cardiomyopathy. Diagnosis is confirmed by iron staining (Prussian blue) and elevated tissue iron content. Early recognition is important as the condition may be reversible with iron chelation therapy.

Usage

Usage note: Should be confirmed with appropriate iron stains, not just clinical suspicion.
