Contraction band necrosis is a characteristic form of myocardial cell death distinguished by the presence of intensely eosinophilic, transverse bands across myocytes due to hypercontraction of sarcomeres. This pattern typically occurs in the setting of reperfusion injury following ischemia, catecholamine excess, or electrical injury. The pathogenesis involves calcium overload leading to sustained muscle contraction and cell death. Unlike coagulative necrosis seen in typical myocardial infarction, contraction band necrosis represents a distinct morphologic pattern that provides important clues about the mechanism and timing of cardiac injury.

Usage

Usage note: Always describe as 'contraction band' necrosis, not 'contractile band' necrosis.
