Full Definition
The Dallas criteria are the established histopathological standards for diagnosing myocarditis from endomyocardial biopsy specimens. Developed in 1986, these criteria require the presence of inflammatory infiltrate associated with myocyte necrosis and/or degeneration not characteristic of ischemic damage. The criteria distinguish between active myocarditis, borderline myocarditis, and ongoing myocarditis. Despite limitations, they remain the gold standard for histological diagnosis of myocarditis.

Usage note: Always capitalize 'Dallas' as it refers to the city where the criteria were established.
