endocarditis

Inflammation of the inner lining of the heart chambers and valves, usually due to infection.

Full Definition

An inflammatory condition affecting the endocardium, most commonly involving the heart valves. Infective endocarditis results from bacterial, fungal, or other microbial invasion, leading to vegetation formation on valve surfaces. Non-infective endocarditis may be associated with autoimmune conditions or malignancy. Pathological features include fibrinous vegetations containing microorganisms, inflammatory cells, and necrotic tissue. Complications include valve destruction, systemic embolization, and metastatic infection.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish between infective and non-infective forms when etiology is established.
