Full Definition

Papillary fibroelastoma is the most common primary cardiac tumor affecting valves, characterized by multiple delicate, frond-like projections arising from the valve surface. These tumors consist of a central core of loose connective tissue covered by endothelium, creating a sea anemone-like appearance. They most commonly affect the aortic valve, followed by mitral, tricuspid, and pulmonary valves. While histologically benign, these tumors pose significant embolic risk due to their friable nature and tendency to fragment. The condition typically affects older adults and may present with stroke, transient ischemic attacks, or other embolic phenomena. Echocardiography shows characteristic mobile, stippled masses attached to valve surfaces.
