Full Definition

Wavy fibers are a distinctive histological finding seen in acute myocardial infarction, appearing as undulated or serpentine myofibers at the periphery of the infarct zone. This morphology results from passive stretching of non-contracting dead myofibers by the surrounding viable, contracting myocardium. Wavy fibers are among the earliest microscopic changes visible in acute myocardial infarction, often appearing within hours of the ischemic event. They represent an important diagnostic feature when evaluating suspected cardiac ischemia.
