Coronary artery calcium density refers to the radiographic density of calcified coronary plaque measured during cardiac CT scanning, typically expressed in Hounsfield units (HU). Dense calcium (>400 HU) suggests mature, stable atherosclerotic plaque, while lower density calcium may indicate more active calcification processes. This parameter complements the total calcium score by providing qualitative information about plaque characteristics. Some studies suggest that calcium density, independent of total volume, may have prognostic implications for cardiovascular events.
