Protein enzyme that regulates LDL receptor degradation and cholesterol metabolism.

Full Definition

Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) is a serine protease that plays a crucial role in cholesterol homeostasis by promoting degradation of LDL receptors in hepatocytes. When PCSK9 binds to LDL receptors, it prevents their recycling to the cell surface, leading to increased circulating LDL cholesterol levels. Understanding PCSK9 function led to development of PCSK9 inhibitor medications (monoclonal antibodies and siRNA therapies) that dramatically lower LDL cholesterol by blocking this protein's action.
