The pooled cohort equations are evidence-based risk prediction algorithms developed from multiple large epidemiological studies to estimate 10-year risk of first atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease event. These equations incorporate age, sex, race, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, blood pressure treatment status, diabetes status, and smoking status. They replaced the Framingham Risk Score in the 2013 ACC/AHA guidelines and are specifically calibrated for non-Hispanic white and African American populations. The equations help identify patients who would benefit from statin therapy for primary prevention and are integrated into electronic health record systems for automated risk calculation.
