Full Definition
Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a non-invasive measurement that assesses arterial stiffness by calculating the speed at which pressure waves generated by cardiac contraction travel through the arterial system. Increased PWV indicates stiffer arteries and is an independent predictor of cardiovascular events. Carotid-femoral PWV is considered the gold standard measurement and is increasingly used in cardiovascular prevention programs to stratify risk and monitor therapeutic interventions.
