SYNTAX score

Pronunciation: SIN-tax

Also written as: SYNTAX — SYNergy between PCI with TAXus and cardiac surgery

Angiographic scoring system quantifying complexity of coronary artery disease to guide revascularization decisions.

Full Definition

The SYNTAX score is a comprehensive angiographic scoring system that quantifies the complexity and extent of coronary artery disease based on lesion characteristics, location, and functional impact. The score considers factors such as lesion length, calcification, tortuosity, bifurcation involvement, and the presence of chronic total occlusions. SYNTAX scores are categorized as low (≤22), intermediate (23-32), or high (≥33) complexity. This scoring system helps guide decision-making between percutaneous coronary intervention and surgical revascularization, particularly for patients with left main or three-vessel coronary disease.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from SYNTAX II score which includes clinical variables.

In Context

  • "The patient's SYNTAX score of 35 indicated high anatomical complexity favoring surgical revascularization." — Interventional cardiology consultation
  • "Heart team discussions incorporate SYNTAX scores to optimize revascularization strategies." — Multidisciplinary care protocol
