coronary angiography

X-ray imaging procedure using contrast dye to visualize coronary arteries and detect blockages.

Full Definition

Coronary angiography is an invasive diagnostic procedure where contrast dye is injected into coronary arteries through a catheter, allowing real-time X-ray visualization of blood flow and identification of stenoses, occlusions, or other abnormalities. The procedure is considered the gold standard for diagnosing coronary artery disease and planning interventional treatments. Images are typically recorded as cine loops showing cardiac motion throughout the cardiac cycle.

Usage

Usage note: Often abbreviated as 'angio' in clinical notes, but full term should be used in formal reports.
