Full Definition

A drug-eluting stent (DES) is a coronary stent coated with antiproliferative medications designed to prevent in-stent restenosis by inhibiting smooth muscle cell proliferation and neointimal hyperplasia. Modern DES utilize biocompatible or biodegradable polymers to deliver drugs such as everolimus, zotarolimus, or sirolimus in a controlled manner over several months. DES have largely replaced bare metal stents due to significantly lower rates of target lesion revascularization, though they require prolonged dual antiplatelet therapy.
