IABP

Also written as: IABP — Intra-aortic balloon pump

A mechanical circulatory support device used during high-risk percutaneous coronary interventions.

Full Definition

An intra-aortic balloon pump is a temporary mechanical circulatory support device inserted into the descending aorta. It provides counterpulsation therapy by inflating during diastole to augment coronary perfusion and deflating during systole to reduce afterload. In cardiovascular radiology reports, IABP placement is often documented as procedural support during complex interventions or as treatment for cardiogenic shock.

Usage

Usage note: Always capitalize as IABP in medical reports. Do not confuse with other mechanical support devices.
