NSTEMI

Pronunciation: N-STEH-mee

Also written as: NSTEMI — Non-ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction

Non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction with subendocardial tissue death but preserved epicardial flow.

Full Definition

Non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) is an acute coronary syndrome characterized by myocardial necrosis without complete coronary occlusion, resulting in subendocardial rather than transmural infarction. Unlike STEMI, the ECG typically shows ST-depression, T-wave inversions, or may be normal, with diagnosis confirmed by elevated cardiac biomarkers (troponin). NSTEMI patients require risk stratification and early invasive strategy within 24-72 hours based on clinical risk scores and presentation severity.

Usage

Usage note: Always capitalize as NSTEMI; hyphenated form 'non-STEMI' also acceptable.

In Context

  • "The patient was diagnosed with NSTEMI based on elevated troponin and ischemic ECG changes." — Admission note
  • "High-risk NSTEMI patients underwent coronary angiography within 24 hours." — Clinical protocol
