OCT

Also written as: OCT — Optical Coherence Tomography

High-resolution intravascular imaging technique using near-infrared light to visualize coronary artery microstructure.

Full Definition

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an advanced intravascular imaging modality that uses near-infrared light to generate high-resolution cross-sectional images of coronary arteries. With resolution approaching 10-15 micrometers, OCT provides detailed visualization of vessel wall architecture, plaque composition, and stent deployment characteristics. Unlike IVUS, OCT requires blood clearance during imaging and has limited penetration depth but offers superior resolution for assessing thin-cap fibroatheromas, stent apposition, and neointimal coverage.

Usage

Usage note: Often used as standalone 'OCT' in cardiology contexts; distinguish from ophthalmologic OCT.

In Context

  • "OCT imaging revealed incomplete stent apposition that was not detected by angiography alone." — Case report
  • "The OCT-guided PCI strategy demonstrated improved procedural outcomes compared to angiography-guided intervention." — Clinical trial
