Myocardial infarction occurring during or within 48 hours of percutaneous coronary intervention.

Full Definition

Periprocedural myocardial infarction (MI) refers to myocardial infarction that occurs during or within 48 hours following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The diagnosis is based on cardiac biomarker elevation (typically troponin) exceeding specific thresholds above baseline values, often accompanied by clinical, electrocardiographic, or imaging evidence of myocardial ischemia. Type 4a periprocedural MI is defined by troponin elevation >5 times the upper reference limit in patients with normal baseline values, or >20% increase if baseline troponin is already elevated. These events are associated with increased short and long-term mortality.

Usage note: Hyphenate 'periprocedural'; distinguish from spontaneous MI by timing and procedural context.
