The portion of the left ventricular outflow tract containing the aortic valve, sinuses of Valsalva, and coronary artery origins.

Full Definition

The aortic root is a complex anatomical structure comprising the aortic valve annulus, the three aortic valve leaflets, the sinuses of Valsalva, the sinotubular junction, and the proximal ascending aorta where the coronary arteries originate. This region is critical for proper aortic valve function and coronary perfusion. Diseases affecting the aortic root include aneurysms, dissection, stenosis, and regurgitation. Surgical interventions range from valve-sparing root replacement (David procedure) to complete root replacement with valve-containing conduits. The geometry and dimensions of the aortic root significantly influence valve competency and ventricular function.
