Cardioplegia arrest refers to the deliberate stopping of the heart's electrical and mechanical activity using a specialized solution containing potassium and other compounds. This technique is essential during cardiac surgery to create a motionless, bloodless operative field while protecting the myocardium from ischemic injury. The arrest is reversible once normal perfusion is restored and the cardioplegic solution is washed out.
