Patch augmentation is a surgical technique involving the use of synthetic or biological patch material to enlarge, reinforce, or reconstruct cardiac structures. Common applications include closure of septal defects, enlargement of small vessels or valve annuli, and repair of torn or damaged tissue. Patch materials may include pericardium (autologous or bovine), Dacron, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), or other synthetic materials. The choice of patch depends on the location, size of the defect, patient age, and expected hemodynamic stresses. Proper patch placement requires attention to geometry and tension to prevent distortion of surrounding structures and ensure optimal long-term function.
