comorbidity

The simultaneous presence of two or more psychiatric disorders in the same individual.

Full Definition

Comorbidity in child and adolescent psychiatry refers to the co-occurrence of multiple psychiatric conditions in a single patient. This phenomenon is extremely common in pediatric mental health, with studies showing that most youth with one disorder meet criteria for at least one additional diagnosis. Common comorbid patterns include ADHD with learning disorders, anxiety with depression, and conduct disorder with substance use. Understanding comorbidity is essential for treatment planning, as interventions must address multiple conditions simultaneously and account for complex symptom interactions.

Usage

Usage note: Preferred over 'dual diagnosis' in formal clinical writing; be specific about which conditions are comorbid.
