graduated exposure

A systematic approach to anxiety treatment involving gradual, progressive confrontation of feared stimuli or situations.

Full Definition

Graduated exposure, also known as systematic desensitization or exposure hierarchy, is a core component of cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxiety disorders in children and adolescents. The technique involves creating a hierarchy of feared situations ranked from least to most anxiety-provoking, then systematically helping the young person confront these fears in a controlled, gradual manner. Each exposure is designed to be manageable while still producing some anxiety, allowing for natural habituation and learning that feared outcomes are unlikely to occur. This approach is highly effective for treating specific phobias, social anxiety, and other anxiety conditions.

Usage

Usage note: May be hyphenated when used as compound modifier; specify target anxiety when possible.
