IEP
Also written as: IEP — Individualized Education Program
Legal document outlining specialized instruction and services for students with disabilities in educational settings.
Full Definition
An Individualized Education Program is a written statement developed for each eligible student with a disability that outlines the child's present levels of performance, annual goals, special education services, related services, and accommodations. The IEP is developed by a team including parents, teachers, special education professionals, and often the student. For children with mental health conditions, the IEP may include behavioral intervention plans, counseling services, social skills instruction, and modified academic expectations. The document must be reviewed annually and represents a legal commitment by the school district to provide specified services.
