mental status examination

Systematic assessment of a patient's psychological functioning including appearance, behavior, cognition, and emotional state.

Full Definition

The mental status examination (MSE) in child and adolescent psychiatry is a structured clinical assessment that evaluates current psychological functioning across multiple domains. Components include appearance and behavior, speech and language, mood and affect, thought process and content, perception, cognition (orientation, attention, memory), insight, and judgment. In pediatric populations, the MSE must be adapted for developmental level and may include observation of play behavior, assessment of developmental milestones, and evaluation of attachment behaviors. The MSE provides a snapshot of functioning at the time of assessment and is documented in specific terminology that allows for comparison across time and between clinicians. Results inform diagnostic considerations and treatment planning decisions.

Usage

Usage note: Commonly abbreviated as MSE in clinical documentation; use consistent terminology for mental status findings.
