Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in children and adolescents develops following exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence. Symptoms include re-experiencing the trauma through flashbacks or nightmares, persistent avoidance of trauma-related stimuli, negative alterations in thoughts and mood, and alterations in arousal and reactivity. In youth, symptoms may manifest differently than in adults, including repetitive play with trauma themes, reenactment through play, and trauma-specific fears. The disorder significantly impairs functioning across multiple domains and requires specialized trauma-focused interventions.
