trauma-informed care

A treatment approach that recognizes and responds to the widespread impact of traumatic stress on children and families.

Full Definition

Trauma-informed care represents a paradigm shift in service delivery that acknowledges the prevalence and impact of trauma in the lives of children and families seeking mental health services. This approach emphasizes physical and emotional safety, trustworthiness, peer support, collaboration, empowerment, and attention to cultural and gender issues. Rather than asking 'What's wrong with you?', trauma-informed care asks 'What happened to you?' The approach recognizes that trauma symptoms may be adaptive responses to adverse experiences and focuses on building resilience rather than pathologizing behaviors. Implementation requires organizational changes, staff training, and modification of policies and procedures to avoid re-traumatization.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from specific trauma treatments when describing interventions.
