bilateral coordination

The ability to use both sides of the body together in a coordinated manner for motor activities.

Full Definition

Bilateral coordination refers to the integration and coordination of both sides of the body to perform motor tasks effectively. This skill involves three types of bilateral integration: symmetrical (both sides doing the same thing), alternating (both sides doing opposite actions), and dominant/non-dominant (one side leading while the other assists). Bilateral coordination is essential for activities such as jumping, clapping, cutting with scissors, and riding a bicycle. Difficulties may indicate neurological issues or developmental delays.

In Context

  • "Poor bilateral coordination affects the child's ability to perform classroom activities requiring two-handed manipulation." — occupational therapy evaluation
  • "Activities targeting bilateral coordination should be incorporated into the daily therapy routine." — treatment planning
