core stability

The ability to maintain postural control and trunk stability during static and dynamic activities.

Full Definition

Core stability refers to the coordinated activation of deep abdominal, back, and pelvic floor muscles to provide a stable base of support for movement and posture. In child development medicine, adequate core stability is essential for gross motor skills, fine motor control, and functional activities such as sitting upright, walking, and manipulating objects. Poor core stability may result from muscle weakness, neurological conditions, or developmental delays, and can significantly impact a child's ability to participate in age-appropriate activities.

In Context

  • "Improving core stability is a priority goal to enhance the child's sitting balance and fine motor performance." — physical therapy plan
  • "The assessment revealed decreased core stability contributing to fatigue during desk activities." — educational evaluation
