PBIS
Also written as: PBIS — Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports
School-wide framework emphasizing positive behavioral supports and evidence-based interventions to improve student outcomes.
Full Definition
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a multi-tiered framework designed to improve and integrate all of the data, systems, and practices affecting student outcomes every day. The approach emphasizes teaching appropriate behaviors rather than simply punishing inappropriate ones, using data-driven decision making to guide interventions. PBIS operates on three tiers: universal supports for all students, targeted interventions for at-risk students, and intensive individualized supports for students with persistent behavioral challenges. In pediatric settings, PBIS principles are often incorporated into treatment plans for children with developmental disabilities, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorders to promote positive behaviors and reduce challenging behaviors across home, school, and community settings.
Usage
Usage note: Preferred acronym is PBIS rather than PBS; emphasize multi-tiered approach in documentation.
