plagiocephaly

Pronunciation: /ˌpleɪdʒioʊˈsɛfəli/

Asymmetrical flattening of the head, typically affecting the back or one side, common in infants due to positioning.

Full Definition

Plagiocephaly refers to asymmetrical head shape characterized by flattening on the back (positional plagiocephaly) or one side of the head. This condition became more prevalent after the Back to Sleep campaign, as infants spending more time on their backs developed flattened areas from sustained pressure. The condition is usually positional rather than caused by premature fusion of skull bones (craniosynostosis). Treatment may include repositioning techniques, increased tummy time, physical therapy for torticollis, or in severe cases, helmet therapy. Most cases improve with conservative management.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from craniosynostosis, which involves premature skull bone fusion.
