Full Definition
Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a non-invasive neuroimaging technique that detects and localizes electrical activity in the brain by measuring the extremely weak magnetic fields generated by neuronal currents. In pediatric epilepsy, MEG is primarily used for presurgical evaluation to identify seizure sources and map eloquent brain areas. MEG offers excellent temporal resolution (milliseconds) and good spatial resolution, making it particularly valuable for localizing epileptic foci in cases where EEG and MRI findings are discordant or unclear. The technique is especially useful in children as it requires no sedation and provides functional information that complements structural MRI findings.
