neural tube defect

A group of birth defects affecting the brain, spine, or spinal cord that occur when the neural tube fails to close properly during early pregnancy.

Full Definition

Neural tube defects (NTDs) are serious birth defects of the central nervous system that result from failure of the neural tube to close completely between 21-28 days after conception. The most common types include spina bifida (affecting the spine), anencephaly (affecting the brain), and encephalocele (affecting the skull and brain). These defects can cause varying degrees of disability depending on the location and severity of the opening. Many neural tube defects can be prevented by adequate folic acid intake before conception and during early pregnancy.
