Full Definition

A cortical malformation characterized by an excessive number of abnormally small gyri that are irregularly folded, creating a characteristic bumpy or cobblestone appearance on brain imaging. This condition results from abnormal late neuronal migration or early cortical organization during fetal development. Polymicrogyria can be focal or diffuse, unilateral or bilateral, and often presents with seizures, developmental delays, and neurological deficits depending on the location and extent of involvement. The condition may be associated with genetic mutations or prenatal insults such as infection.
