Full Definition

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a neuromodulation therapy involving surgical implantation of a device that delivers intermittent electrical stimulation to the left vagus nerve. The system consists of a pulse generator implanted in the chest and an electrode wrapped around the vagus nerve in the neck. VNS is approved for treatment of medication-resistant epilepsy in patients who are not candidates for resective surgery. The mechanism of action is not fully understood but may involve modulation of neurotransmitter systems and brain networks involved in seizure generation. Seizure reduction typically occurs gradually over months to years.
