akinetic mutism

A neurological condition characterized by profound apathy and lack of spontaneous movement or speech despite preserved consciousness.

Full Definition

Akinetic mutism is a severe disorder of motivation and motor initiation, typically resulting from bilateral frontal lobe or anterior cingulate cortex lesions. Patients remain awake and can track with their eyes but show extreme paucity of movement and speech. Unlike catatonia, reflexes and basic neurological functions remain intact. The condition represents a dissociation between consciousness and the drive to act or communicate.
