angiogram

A radiographic study using contrast material to visualize blood vessels in the brain and neck for diagnosing vascular abnormalities.

Full Definition

Cerebral angiography remains the gold standard for evaluating intracranial vascular pathology, including aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, stenosis, and vasculitis. The procedure involves catheter insertion through a peripheral artery, advancement to cerebral vessels, and injection of iodinated contrast while obtaining real-time fluoroscopic images. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) enhances vessel visualization by subtracting background structures. Though invasive, angiography provides superior spatial and temporal resolution compared to non-invasive imaging.

Usage

Usage note: Specify whether conventional angiography or non-invasive CT/MR angiography to avoid confusion.

In Context

  • "The angiogram revealed a 7mm anterior communicating artery aneurysm suitable for coiling." — Interventional radiology report
  • "Follow-up angiogram at 6 months demonstrated complete aneurysm occlusion." — Post-procedure assessment
