corpus callosotomy

A neurosurgical procedure involving partial or complete division of the corpus callosum to treat intractable epilepsy with drop attacks.

Full Definition

Corpus callosotomy disconnects the two cerebral hemispheres by cutting fibers of the corpus callosum, the brain's primary interhemispheric connection. This palliative procedure is typically reserved for patients with severe, medication-resistant epilepsy characterized by drop attacks that cause frequent injuries. While it doesn't cure epilepsy, it can prevent the spread of seizures between hemispheres, reducing the severity of generalized tonic-clonic seizures and eliminating drop attacks in many patients.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from hemispherectomy and other epilepsy surgical procedures in operative notes.
