ideomotor apraxia

A motor planning disorder where patients understand tasks but cannot execute learned movements on command despite intact motor and sensory function.

Full Definition

Ideomotor apraxia results from lesions disrupting the connection between conceptual knowledge of actions and their motor execution, typically involving left parietal or frontal regions. Patients can perform automatic movements naturally but struggle with purposeful gestures when requested. For example, they may be unable to demonstrate brushing teeth on command but can brush their teeth normally during daily routines. This dissociation between voluntary and automatic movement execution is a hallmark of the condition.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from ideational apraxia, which involves conceptual rather than motor planning deficits.
