Kindling is a neurobiological phenomenon discovered in epilepsy research where repeated application of initially subthreshold electrical or chemical stimuli to brain tissue progressively lowers the seizure threshold, eventually resulting in spontaneous seizures. This process involves permanent changes in neural excitability and synaptic plasticity, particularly in the limbic system. The kindling model has provided crucial insights into epileptogenesis and the development of temporal lobe epilepsy. The concept also has implications for understanding how minor repeated brain insults may accumulate to produce significant neurological dysfunction over time.
