Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses powerful magnetic fields and radiofrequency pulses to generate detailed images of brain and spinal cord structures. MRI provides superior soft tissue contrast compared to CT scans, making it the preferred modality for evaluating most neurological conditions including stroke, tumors, multiple sclerosis, and degenerative diseases. Various sequences (T1-weighted, T2-weighted, FLAIR, DWI) provide complementary information about tissue characteristics, pathology, and physiological processes. Contraindications include certain metallic implants, and the procedure requires patient cooperation due to noise and confined space during lengthy acquisition times.
