pseudoseizure

Non-epileptic event that resembles an epileptic seizure but lacks the electrical brain activity characteristic of true seizures.

Full Definition

Pseudoseizures, now more appropriately termed psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES), are behavioral episodes that clinically resemble epileptic seizures but are not associated with abnormal electrical brain activity. These events are typically psychogenic in origin, often related to psychological stress, trauma, or conversion disorders. Diagnosis requires video-EEG monitoring to demonstrate the absence of ictal EEG changes during clinical events. PNES can coexist with true epileptic seizures, making diagnosis challenging. Treatment involves psychological intervention rather than antiepileptic drugs, and misdiagnosis can lead to inappropriate medical management and iatrogenic complications.

Usage

Usage note: Prefer 'psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES)' over 'pseudoseizures' in formal documentation.
