Goniometry is the standardised method of measuring the angle of a joint using a device called a goniometer, which resembles a protractor with two arms. It is used routinely by physiotherapists and occupational therapists to document baseline ROM, track progress, and set rehabilitation goals. In clinical documentation and research articles, editors should ensure that goniometric measurements are recorded with the correct joint, movement direction, and patient position (as these affect the reading). Universal goniometry and inclinometry are related but distinct approaches sometimes mentioned together in methodology sections. Results are typically reported in degrees with the anatomical reference position noted.
