IDDSI
Also written as: IDDSI — International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative
An international framework providing standardised terminology and definitions for texture-modified foods and thickened liquids used in dysphagia management.
Full Definition
The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) is a globally adopted framework consisting of an eight-level continuum (levels 0–7) used to describe the texture of foods and the flow of drinks for individuals with dysphagia. Levels 0–4 describe drinks (from thin to extremely thick) and levels 3–7 describe foods (from liquidised to regular). The IDDSI replaced earlier national frameworks such as the Australian Standardised Labels and the UK National Descriptors. In rehabilitation documents, editors must ensure that IDDSI level numbers and their corresponding names are accurately paired (e.g., Level 4 = Pureed; Level 5 = Minced and Moist). The framework name should be written in full on first use, followed by the abbreviation IDDSI.
Usage
Usage note: Pair level numbers with their official IDDSI label names (capitalised). Do not use legacy terms such as 'minced' without the corresponding IDDSI level number in current clinical documents.
