A behavioural phenomenon in which a patient suppresses use of a neurologically impaired limb due to repeated failed attempts, leading to functional disuse beyond what the neurological deficit alone would cause.

Learned non-use is a concept central to upper-limb neurorehabilitation, describing the conditioned suppression of movement in an affected extremity that develops when early post-injury attempts to use the limb are unsuccessful. Over time, the patient learns to compensate with the unaffected limb, reinforcing disuse of the impaired side even as neurological recovery occurs. This phenomenon is the primary theoretical rationale for Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT).
